Etymology
Zoetrope comes from the Greek words "zoe" (ζωή), meaning "life," and "tropos" (τρόπος), meaning "turn" or "rotation."
Meaning
A zoetrope is a device that creates an optical illusion of movement by rapidly displaying a series of static images. It consists of a cylindrical drum with vertical slits cut into its sides. When the drum is spun while the images are illuminated, the viewer can look through the slits and see the images appear to move as the drum rotates.
Origin
The zoetrope was invented in 1834 by the British mathematician and physicist William Horner. He called it the "daedaleum," after the mythical craftsman Daedalus. In 1860, the American inventor John Aitkin developed a version of the zoetrope called the "wheel of life" or "kineograph."
Zoetropes were popular toys and entertainment devices in the mid-19th century. They were used to show scenes of famous battles, historical events, and popular plays. Zoetropes also helped to pave the way for the development of motion pictures by demonstrating the possibility of creating the illusion of movement using a series of still images.
