Yahtzee etymology

Etymology

The word "yahtzee" is an Americanism believed to have originated from the Yiddish-English word "yetsi," meaning "hey, shot."

Meaning

Yahtzee is a board game for two or more players. The objective of the game is to be the first player to get five combinations of dice in a certain number of rolls. The player who rolls yahtzee, which is when a player rolls five of the same number on a single roll, has the highest score in the game.

Origin

Yahtzee was invented in 1954 by Edwin S. Lowe, the founder of the company Milton Bradley. Lowe got the idea for the game after playing another dice game called "Yacht." He changed the name to "Yahtzee" to make it easier to pronounce and spell.

Yahtzee was an instant success, selling over 45 million copies in its first two years. It is now one of the most popular board games in the world.
