Meaning and Origin:
Vitamins are organic compounds that are required in small quantities for the proper functioning of the body. They cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet.
The term "vitamin" was first proposed in 1912 by Polish biochemist Casimir Funk. Funk was studying beriberi, a disease caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1). He isolated a substance from rice bran that could cure beriberi and proposed that it was a "vital amine" (vita + amine).
However, it was later discovered that not all vitamins are amines. In 1920, Jack Cecil Drummond proposed the term "vitamine" (note the missing "l") to include both amine and non-amine essential nutrients.
Over time, the term "vitamine" was shortened to "vitamin." The suffix "-min" was added to many other substances that were later discovered to be essential for life, such as riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), and ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
