Meaning and Origin:
Aerobic refers to processes or organisms that require oxygen for survival or energy production. The term was first coined in the late 19th century by the German physiologist Otto Warburg.
Warburg was studying the metabolism of yeast cells and discovered that they could produce energy either with or without oxygen. When oxygen was present, the cells produced energy through a process called aerobic respiration, which is much more efficient than anaerobic respiration (without oxygen).
Warburg's work helped to establish the importance of oxygen in cellular metabolism and led to the development of the concept of aerobic and anaerobic processes. Today, the term aerobic is used in a variety of contexts, including:
