Origin:

The term "troposphere" was first coined by the French meteorologist Léon Teisserenc de Bort in 1889. He observed that the temperature of the atmosphere decreases rapidly with height in the lower layer, where weather events occur. He called this layer the "troposphere" because it is the region where the temperature is constantly changing (tropo- means "changing").

In contrast, the layer above the troposphere, where the temperature remains relatively constant, was named the "stratosphere" (strato- means "layer").
