derecho etymology

Etymology:

The word "derecho" comes from the Spanish noun "derecho," meaning "straight" or "right." It was first used in the meteorological context by Argentine meteorologist Gustavo Rusch in 1888.

Meaning:

A derecho is a type of severe convective windstorm characterized by:

  • Straight-line wind gusts exceeding 58 miles per hour (93 kilometers per hour)
  • A continuous damaging wind event lasting for at least 240 kilometers (150 miles)
  • A narrow band of damage along the storm's path

Origin:

Derechos typically form from clusters of thunderstorms known as bow echoes or line echoes. When these storms align and form a continuous line, they can merge into a larger and more intense convective system.

The strong winds in a derecho are generated by a process known as the "rear inflow jet." As the bow echo moves forward, it creates a zone of low pressure behind it. Air from the sides is drawn into this low-pressure area, creating a surge of wind that can be extremely damaging.
