Etymology
The word "allotropy" is derived from the Greek words "allos" (ἄλλος), meaning "other," and "tropos" (τρόπος), meaning "way, turn, manner."
Meaning
Allotropy is the occurrence of an element in two or more different forms that have the same chemical composition but different physical properties. These different forms are called allotropes.
Origin
The concept of allotropy was first proposed by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius in 1841. He used the term to describe the different structural forms of carbon, namely diamond and graphite.
