Etymology
The name Ophiuchus is derived from two Greek words:
Meaning
Ophiuchus translates literally to "serpent-holder" or "snake-bearer."
Origin
Ophiuchus is one of the constellations recognized by ancient astronomers, most likely the Babylonians. It is believed to represent Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, who was depicted as carrying a rod entwined with a snake. The snake represented wisdom and healing, as it was believed that snakes shed their skin to renew themselves.
Mythology
According to Greek mythology, Ophiuchus represents Asclepius, the son of Apollo and the mortal Coronis. Asclepius was raised by the centaur Chiron, who taught him the art of healing. When Asclepius became a skilled healer, he was able to resurrect the dead. This angered Zeus, the king of the gods, who feared that Asclepius would upset the balance of life and death. As a punishment, Zeus struck Asclepius with a thunderbolt, killing him. After his death, Asclepius was placed in the sky as the constellation Ophiuchus.
