zloty etymology

Etymology

The word "zloty" (zł) derives from the Polish word "złoty" (IPA: [ˈzwɔtɨ]), which means "golden".

Meaning and Origin

Złoty was originally the name for a gold coin introduced in Poland in the 14th century. It was widely accepted and used as a currency throughout Europe. The name "zloty" refers to the coin's golden color and value.

Over time, the złoty coin evolved into the official currency of Poland. The modern złoty was introduced in 1995 after the collapse of the Polish communist regime. It replaced the previous Polish currency, the złoty polski (PLN).

The złoty (zł) is divisible into 100 groszy (gr).
