pyrolusite etymology

Etymology:

The word "pyrolusite" is derived from two Greek words:

  • "pyr" (πῦρ): Fire
  • "lysis" (λύσις): Loosing, breaking down

Meaning:

Pyrolusite is a mineral composed primarily of manganese dioxide (MnO2). Its name literally means "fire loosener" or "fire breaker," which refers to its ability to release oxygen when heated.

Origin:

The term "pyrolusite" was first used in 1806 by the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth. Klaproth observed that the mineral decomposed upon heating, releasing oxygen and leaving behind manganese oxide. He named it "pyrolusite" based on this property.
