lysol etymology

Etymology and Meaning

The word "Lysol" is a brand name for a disinfectant and cleaning product created by the United States-based company Reckitt Benckiser. The name, which is also used as a generic term for disinfectant cleaners, is a portmanteau of two Greek words:

  • lysis: meaning "to dissolve" or "to destroy"
  • -sol: a suffix meaning "solution"

Therefore, the name "Lysol" literally means "a solution that dissolves or destroys."

Origin

Lysol was first developed in 1889 by the German chemist and physician Ferdinand Blum. Blum was seeking to create a safe and effective disinfectant that could be used to kill germs and bacteria on surfaces and in hospitals. He experimented with various combinations of chemicals and eventually settled on a formula that included cresol, a phenol derivative with antiseptic properties.

In 1911, the Lehn & Fink company purchased the rights to Lysol and began marketing it as a household disinfectant. It quickly became a popular and trusted brand due to its effectiveness and safety. Lysol has since been acquired by Reckitt Benckiser and continues to be one of the most widely used disinfectant cleaners in the world.
