The Greek word hýdra ultimately derives from the Proto-Indo-European root *wed-, meaning "water". This root is also found in words such as "water", "wet", and "widow" (a female left alone after the death of her husband).
In Greek mythology, the Hydra was a multi-headed monster slain by Hercules as part of his twelve labors. The Hydra was said to live in the swamps near the city of Lerna, and its poisonous breath could kill at a distance. Hercules confronted the Hydra and sliced off its heads, but two new heads would grow back for each one he severed. Eventually, with the help of his nephew Iolaus, Hercules was able to defeat the Hydra by cauterizing the stumps of its heads with a firebrand.
