gravigrade etymology

Etymology

Gravigrade comes from the Latin words gravis ("heavy") and gradus ("step").

Meaning and Origin

Gravigrade is an adjective that describes animals that walk with their soles flat on the ground, with their weight distributed evenly across all four limbs. This type of locomotion is also known as plantigrade locomotion.

Gravigrade animals include humans, bears, and elephants. In contrast, animals that walk on their toes, such as cats and dogs, are called digitigrade animals.

The gravirade gait is more stable and efficient for animals that carry heavy loads or move slowly over long distances. It is also less tiring than digitigrade locomotion.
