Cyclops etymology

Etymology

The word "cyclops" is derived from the Greek words "kýklos" (κύκλος), meaning "circle," and "ṓps" (ὤψ), meaning "eye."

Meaning and Origin

In Greek mythology, the Cyclopes were a race of one-eyed giants who were the sons of Uranus (the sky) and Gaia (the earth). They were known for their strength, size, and fierce disposition.

According to Hesiod's "Theogony," the Cyclopes were three in number: Brontes (thunder), Steropes (lightning), and Arges (bright as lightning). They were imprisoned in Tartarus by their father, Uranus, for their insolence. Zeus, the king of the gods, later freed them and enlisted their help in the Titanomachy, the war against the Titans.

The Cyclopes were said to have built the walls of Mycenae and other Cyclopean structures around Greece. Homer's "Odyssey" depicts them as savage, cannibalistic creatures who dwelled in caves.

The term "cyclops" has also been used in science to describe certain organisms with a single central eye, such as the cyclops jellyfish and the water flea.
