Meaning
Therefore, Amritsar literally means "pool of the nectar of immortality."
Origin
The city of Amritsar was founded by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, in 1577. According to legend, Guru Ram Das was guided to a site where he dug a well of nectar water, which became known as the Amrit Sarovar. The city was built around this sacred pool and became a major pilgrimage center for Sikhs.
Significance
The Amrit Sarovar is considered one of the holiest sites in Sikhism. It is believed that bathing in its waters can cleanse the mind and body of sins. The city of Amritsar is also home to the Golden Temple, which is the holiest shrine in Sikhism.
