Etymology
The word "suttee" comes from the Sanskrit word "sati," which means "faithful wife."
Meaning
Suttee is a Hindu practice in which a widow immolates herself on her husband's funeral pyre.
Origin
The practice of suttee likely originated in ancient India as a way to ensure that a wife would not be forced to remarry after her husband's death. In many cultures, widows were seen as vulnerable and often faced social and economic hardship. By committing suicide, a wife could avoid these difficulties and be reunited with her husband in the afterlife.
Suttee was first mentioned in Hindu religious texts around the 4th century CE. The practice became more common during the medieval period, and it reached its peak during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Prevalence
Suttee was most prevalent in northern India, but it was also practiced in other regions of the country. The practice was particularly common among high-caste women.
Abolition
The British colonial government outlawed suttee in 1829. However, the practice continued to be performed in some parts of India until the early 20th century.
