Meaning and Origin:
The genus name Paedophryne therefore means "childlike toad" or "small toad." This is a fitting name for the species within this genus, which are the smallest known frogs in the world.
The genus Paedophryne was first described by American herpetologist Edward Norton Lorenz Kramer in 1977. The type species, Paedophryne australis, is found in rainforests of Queensland, Australia.
Since then, several other species have been discovered, all of which are found in the rainforests of Papua New Guinea and Australia. These tiny frogs are typically less than 10 millimeters (0.4 inches) in length, making them extremely difficult to spot in their natural habitats.
