Occitan etymology

Etymology

The name "Occitan" is derived from the medieval Latin phrase "lingua occitana", meaning "language of Occitania". Occitania is a historical and cultural region in southern France, where the language is primarily spoken.

The term "Occitan" itself is believed to have originated from the name of a Germanic tribe known as the "Gotones" or "Goths". When the Goths invaded the region in the 5th century CE, they brought with them their own language, which was adopted by the local population and eventually evolved into Occitan.

Meaning and Origin

Occitan is a Romance language that belongs to the Indo-European language family. It is closely related to Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian, all of which share a common ancestor in Latin.

The Occitan language has its origins in the Vulgar Latin spoken by the inhabitants of Roman Gaul during the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century CE, Latin began to fragment into different dialects, and Occitan evolved from one of these dialects, known as "Occitan or Provençal".

Occitan was once a prestigious language in southern France, used in literature, administration, and commerce. However, it faced decline with the rise of the French language and the centralization of France in the 16th century. Today, Occitan is spoken by an estimated 1.5 million people, primarily in southern France, and is recognized as a regional language by the French government.
