Prussia etymology

Etymology:

The name "Prussia" is derived from the Old Prussian word "Prūsa", which means "land by the sea" or "near the sea".

Meaning:

Prussia originally referred to the region around the Sambian Peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast, which was inhabited by the Old Prussians, a Baltic tribe.

Origin:

The name Prussia first appeared in written records in the 10th century, when the monk Widukind of Corvey mentioned a "Pruzzi" people living in the area.

Over time, the term "Prussia" came to refer to a larger territory that included not only the coastal region but also inland areas. In 1525, the Duchy of Prussia was established as a secular state under the rule of the Teutonic Order.

In 1701, the Duchy became a kingdom. The Kingdom of Prussia later expanded to become a major power in Europe, ruling over an extensive territory that included parts of present-day Germany, Poland, and Russia.

The name Prussia was abolished after World War II, and the territory that had once been part of Prussia was divided among various countries.
