epistasis etymology

Etymology and Meaning of Epistasis

The term "epistasis" is derived from the Greek words:

  • epi: meaning "upon" or "over"
  • stasis: meaning "standing" or "condition"

Hence, epistasis literally translates to "standing over" or "superimposed condition."

Origin

The concept of epistasis in genetics was first proposed by Gregor Mendel in his 1865 paper, "Experiments on Plant Hybrids." Mendel observed that the phenotypic expression of one gene could be masked by the presence of another gene at a different locus. He called this phenomenon "hypostatic," but it is now known as epistasis.

Meaning

Epistasis refers to the interaction between different genes at different loci that affects the expression of a particular phenotype. It occurs when the effect of one gene is modified or masked by the effect of another gene.

Types of Epistasis

  • Dominant Epistasis: The expression of one gene completely suppresses the expression of another gene, regardless of its genotype.
  • Recessive Epistasis: The expression of one gene only suppresses the expression of another gene when the recessive allele of the first gene is present.
  • Complementary Epistasis: The combined effect of two different genes results in a new phenotype that is different from the effects of either gene alone.
  • Supplementary Epistasis: Two different genes independently contribute to the same phenotype, resulting in a cumulative effect.
  • Inhibitory Epistasis: One gene inhibits the expression of another gene, resulting in a decreased phenotype.
  • Double Epistasis: The interaction of three or more genes affects the expression of a phenotype.
