aqualung etymology

Etymology

The word "aqualung" is a blend of the Latin words "aqua" (water) and "pulmo" (lung).

Meaning

An aqualung is a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) that allows divers to breathe underwater. It consists of a cylinder of compressed air or gas, a regulator to control the flow of gas, and a mouthpiece or full-face mask.

Origin

The term "aqualung" was first used in 1943 by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan, the French inventors of the first commercially successful SCUBA system. They needed a name that would be easily recognizable and descriptive of their invention, and "aqualung" fit the bill.

Usage

The word "aqualung" is still commonly used today to refer to any type of SCUBA system. However, other terms, such as "SCUBA gear" or "diving equipment," are also used.
