typhoid etymology

Etymology:

The word "typhoid" comes from the Greek words:

  • typhos: (τύφος) meaning "stupor, bewilderment" or "dense smoke"
  • eidos: (εἶδος) meaning "form" or "appearance"

Meaning:

Typhoid refers to a bacterial infection that causes a high fever, delirium, abdominal pain, and a rash. It is also known as enteric fever.

Origin:

Typhoid is caused by the Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi bacteria. It was first identified as a distinct disease in the early 19th century. Prior to that, it was often confused with other fevers.

History:

The description of typhoid dates back to the 5th century BCE by the Greek physician Hippocrates. However, it was not until the 19th century that the identification and understanding of typhoid as a specific infection progressed. In 1880, the German physician Karl Joseph Eberth identified the causal bacteria, which was later named Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi in his honor.
