The potentiometer was invented in 1834 by German physicist Johann Christian Poggendorff. Poggendorff developed the device as a way to measure the electromotive force (EMF) of a battery.
How a Potentiometer Works:
A potentiometer consists of a resistor with a sliding contact. By moving the sliding contact, the resistance between the input terminal and the sliding contact can be varied. This allows the voltage between the input terminal and the sliding contact to be adjusted.
