Etymology:
The word "totipotent" is derived from two Latin roots:
Meaning and Origin:
Totipotent cells are cells that have the potential to develop into any cell type in the body. They are found in the early embryo, where they give rise to all the tissues and organs of the developing organism.
The term "totipotent" was first coined by the German embryologist Wilhelm Roux in 1885. Roux used it to describe the early blastomeres of the frog embryo, which he showed could develop into complete embryos if isolated and cultured.
Totipotency is a unique property of early embryonic cells. As development proceeds, cells become more specialized and lose their totipotent capacity. By the time an organism is fully formed, only a few types of cells, such as stem cells, retain the ability to differentiate into multiple cell types.
