Poliomyelitis literally means "inflammation of the gray matter of the spinal cord."
Origin
The term "poliomyelitis" was first used by German physician Jakob Heine in 1840 to describe a condition characterized by inflammation and degeneration of the gray matter of the spinal cord. The term was later adopted by Swedish physician Karl Oskar Medin in 1890, who described an epidemic of the disease in Stockholm.
Usage
Poliomyelitis is commonly known as polio. It is a highly infectious viral disease that can cause paralysis and even death. The polio vaccine, developed by Jonas Salk in 1955, has been highly effective in preventing the disease worldwide.
