Etymology
The word "monist" is derived from the Greek word "monos," meaning "one" or "single." It was first coined in the 17th century by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
Meaning
A monist is someone who adheres to the philosophical doctrine that reality is fundamentally one and unified. Monism rejects the idea of duality or pluralism, which argues that reality is composed of multiple independent entities.
Origin
The concept of monism has roots in ancient Greek philosophy. Philosophers such as Parmenides and Heraclitus argued for the unity and indivisibility of reality. However, the term "monism" as we know it today emerged in the 17th century with Leibniz's writings.
Leibniz proposed that reality consists of infinitely many "monads," which are simple, indivisible, and without parts. Each monad is a microcosm of the entire universe and reflects the entire universe from its own perspective.
In the 19th century, monism was further developed by philosophers such as Ernst Haeckel and Wilhelm Ostwald. They argued that all of reality, including mind and matter, can be reduced to a single substance or energy. This view became known as "materialism" or "physical monism."
