The name "Miocene" comes from the Greek words "meion," meaning "less," and "kainos," meaning "recent."

The Miocene epoch refers to a period of geological time that lasted from approximately 23 million to 5.3 million years ago, making it the fifth and penultimate epoch of the Neogene period.

The term "Miocene" was first proposed by Swiss geologist Karl Mayer-Eymar in 1857. He chose the name based on his observation that the marine fossils from this epoch were intermediate in character between those of the older Oligocene epoch and the younger Pliocene epoch:
