espresso etymology

Etymology

The word "espresso" originated in Italian and can be traced back to two possible sources:

  • Expresso: Derived from the Italian "espresso," which means "pressed out" or "expressed." This refers to the pressure extraction process used to make espresso.
  • Espresso da filtro: Derived from the Italian "espresso da filtro," meaning "coffee from a filter." This term was used in the 19th century to refer to coffee brewed using a filtering system.

Meaning

Espresso is a strong, concentrated coffee beverage prepared by forcing hot, pressurized water through finely-ground coffee beans. It is typically served in a small, demitasse cup, and is known for its rich flavor, high caffeine content, and thick layer of crema (a golden-brown foam).

Origin

The invention of espresso is often attributed to Angelo Moriondo, an Italian inventor from Turin. In 1884, he patented a steam-powered coffee machine that used pressure extraction to produce a concentrated coffee beverage.

In the early 20th century, espresso became popular in Italy, particularly in cafes and bars. It was introduced to the United States in the 1930s by Italian immigrants, and later gained widespread popularity during the 1950s and 1960s with the rise of coffee shops and specialty coffee culture.

Today, espresso is enjoyed around the world as a popular morning beverage, an afternoon pick-me-up, and the base for many other coffee drinks, such as cappuccinos and lattes.
