The concept of the diode originated with the early development of vacuum tubes in the early 20th century. In 1904, John Ambrose Fleming invented the first practical diode, known as a thermionic diode or Fleming valve. It consisted of a heated filament (cathode) and a metal plate (anode) enclosed in a vacuum tube. When the filament was heated, it emitted electrons that flowed from the cathode to the anode, creating an electric current. However, current could not flow from the anode to the cathode.
This discovery led to the development of semiconductor diodes, which replaced vacuum tubes in most applications. The first semiconductor diode was developed by the physicist Walter Schottky in 1945. It used a metal-semiconductor junction to create a one-way path for electrons.
Today, diodes are widely used in electronics for various applications, including rectification (converting AC to DC), signal regulation, and electronic logic.
