Etymology:
Meaning:
Atheroma refers to a fatty deposit on the inner lining of an artery.
Origin:
Atheroma was first described by the Greek physician Galen in the 2nd century AD. He observed fatty deposits in the arteries of individuals who had died from sudden and unexplained illnesses. Galen believed that these deposits were caused by an imbalance of the four humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) and that they could lead to hardening of the arteries.
The term "atheroma" was later used by the 17th-century anatomist Giovanni Battista Morgagni to describe the fatty plaques that form in arteries affected by atherosclerosis. Morgagni recognized that atheroma could lead to narrowing of the arteries and insufficient blood flow to various organs.
