Etymology
The word "vanadium" is derived from the Germanic goddess Vanadis (Freyja), who was associated with beauty, fertility, and prophecy. The element was named after her by the Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström in 1830.
Meaning
Origin
Vanadium was first discovered in 1801 by the Mexican mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río. He called it "erythronium" because of its reddish-brown color. However, his discovery was initially dismissed as an impure form of chromium.
In 1830, Nils Gabriel Sefström rediscovered vanadium in an iron ore sample from Taberg, Sweden. He recognized it as a new element and named it after the Norse goddess Vanadis.
Vanadium is relatively rare in the Earth's crust and is mainly found in vanadium-bearing minerals such as patronite, carnotite, and vanadinite.
