Tantalus is a legendary figure from Greek mythology who was punished by the gods for his arrogance and hubris. He was forced to stand in a pool of water beneath a laden fruit tree. Whenever he tried to drink the water, it would recede. Similarly, whenever he reached for the fruit, the branches would lift out of reach. This constant torment and frustration gave rise to the term "tantalize" in the English language, meaning "to torment with something just out of reach."
