Etymology:

Niobium derives its name from the Greek mythology figure Niobe, daughter of King Tantalus of Lydia.

Meaning:

Niobium's name symbolizes the element's rarity and elusiveness. Niobe was known for her pride and defiance, and she was tragically punished by the gods. Similarly, niobium is a relatively rare metal that was difficult to isolate and identify.

Origin:

The name "niobium" was first proposed by the German chemist Heinrich Rose in 1844. He named the element after Niobe because of its similar properties to tantalum, which had been named after her father, Tantalus.

Prior to Rose's proposal, the element was known by other names, including "columbium" after the mineral from which it was first extracted. However, Rose's name eventually became the accepted international designation.

The element was also independently discovered by the English chemist Charles Hatchett in 1801, who named it columbium. The name was derived from the Latin name of the mineral he was working with, which was found in the United States.
