The term "photosynthesis" was first used in 1802 by Jan Ingenhousz, a Dutch physician and scientist. Ingenhousz conducted experiments demonstrating that plants release oxygen into the atmosphere in the presence of sunlight.
In 1864, the German physiologist Julius von Sachs coined the term "photosynthesis" to describe the entire process of converting light energy into chemical energy in plants.
