Meaning

A photogravure is a printing process that uses a photographic image to create an intaglio print.

Origin

Photogravure was invented in the 1850s by Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of the calotype photographic process. Talbot's method involved exposing a sensitized gelatin plate to light, which hardened the gelatin in proportion to the amount of light it received. The plate was then etched with acid, creating an intaglio image that could be inked and printed.

Photogravure quickly became a popular method for reproducing photographs and other images. It was used to illustrate books, magazines, and newspapers. Photogravures were also used to create fine art prints, and many famous artists, such as Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz, used the process.

Photogravure remained a popular printing process until the early 20th century, when it was replaced by offset lithography. However, photogravures are still produced today, and they continue to be highly prized for their rich tones and detail.
