Meaning
Penicillin is a powerful antibiotic, produced by certain types of mold, that is used to kill or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Origin
The discovery of penicillin is attributed to the British bacteriologist Alexander Fleming in 1928. Fleming noticed that a mold growing on a bacterial culture plate had inhibited the growth of nearby bacteria. He isolated the mold and determined that it was a strain of Penicillium notatum. He named the substance produced by the mold "penicillin," and its potential as an antibiotic was subsequently investigated.
Over the next decade, researchers from Oxford University, led by Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, developed and refined penicillin for clinical use. In 1941, the first patient was successfully treated with penicillin, and it quickly became one of the most important antibiotics in modern medicine.
