Etymology
The word "neoteny" is derived from the Greek words "neos" (νέος), meaning "new" or "young," and "teinein" (τείνειν), meaning "to stretch" or "to extend."
Meaning
Neoteny refers to the retention of juvenile characteristics in an adult organism, beyond the typical time of development for its species. In other words, it is the retention of youthful features into adulthood.
Origin
The concept of neoteny was first proposed by the German zoologist August Weismann in 1885. He observed that certain species, such as the axolotl salamander, retained their larval characteristics throughout their adult lives. Weismann suggested that this phenomenon could be explained by the suppression of certain growth processes during development.
Over time, the concept of neoteny has been applied to a wide range of organisms, including humans. It is now recognized that neoteny can play a significant role in evolution, influencing the development of new traits and adaptations.
