Etymology
The word "magma" is derived from the ancient Greek word μάγμα (mágma), which means "a thick paste" or "a kneaded mass." The term was first used in geology in the late 18th century by the French geologist Jean-Étienne Guettard to describe the molten rock material that erupts from volcanoes.
