infra red etymology

Etymology:

  • Infra (Latin): "Below"
  • Red (Latin): "Red"

Meaning:

Infrared radiation refers to electromagnetic waves that have wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The wavelength range of infrared radiation typically falls between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm).

Origin:

The term "infrared" was coined by the German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter in 1800. Ritter conducted experiments with a prism to separate sunlight into its component colors. He discovered that there was invisible radiation beyond the violet end of the spectrum that he called "chemical rays." This radiation was later found to have heating effects and was named "infrared" due to its position "below" the color red in the visible spectrum.
