Etymology
The word "ideology" is derived from the French word "idéologie," which in turn is derived from the Greek words "ἰδέα" (idea) and "λόγος" (speech or reason).
Meaning
Ideology refers to a system of ideas and beliefs that shape a person's or group's worldview and guide their actions. It encompasses the political, economic, social, and cultural values, beliefs, and assumptions that influence how individuals and societies perceive, understand, and interact with the world around them.
Origin
The term "ideology" was first coined by the French philosopher Antoine Destutt de Tracy in the late 18th century. Tracy used the term to describe the new, scientific approach to human knowledge that was emerging during the Enlightenment. He believed that this approach could be used to create a rational and orderly society based on principles derived from the natural world.
However, the term "ideology" gradually gained a more negative connotation, particularly in the wake of the French Revolution. It came to be associated with overly abstract or utopian ideas that were divorced from practical reality and used to justify political oppression.
