The origin of the name Hermes is uncertain, but there are several theories:
Mythic Origins
In Greek mythology, Hermes is the son of Zeus and Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. He was born on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. As a child, he was a cunning thief who stole Apollo's cattle and invented the lyre.
Zeus recognized Hermes's intelligence and quick wit and appointed him as his messenger. Hermes became known for his winged sandals, which allowed him to travel swiftly between the realms of gods, humans, and the underworld.
