Etymology:
Meaning:
Fartlek is a type of running training that involves alternating periods of fast and slow running, usually done over varied terrain.
Origin:
Fartlek was developed in the 1930s by Swedish track and field coach Gösta Holmér. Observing that runners who trained exclusively at a steady pace lacked the ability to accelerate and change speeds, Holmér devised a system of training that incorporated intervals of fast running into longer, slower runs.
The concept of fartlek is based on the belief that by varying the pace and intensity of a run, runners can improve their cardiovascular fitness, speed, and endurance. By incorporating hills, obstacles, and other challenges into their fartlek workouts, runners can simulate the demands of real-world running.
Fartlek became popular among Swedish runners in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s, it was introduced to the United States by American coach Bill Bowerman, who coached the legendary Oregon Track Club. Fartlek has since become a staple of running training programs worldwide.
