Eohippus etymology

Etymology

The name "Eohippus" is derived from three Greek words:

  • Eos: Dawn, referring to the early geological era in which the animal lived.
  • Hippos: Horse, indicating the animal's equine-like characteristics.
  • -us: Suffix indicating a member of a group.

Meaning

Eohippus literally means "Dawn Horse." It is a genus of extinct equid mammals that lived during the Eocene epoch, approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago.

Origin

The first Eohippus fossils were discovered in the late 19th century in North America. The species Eohippus angustidens was described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1876. Eohippus is considered to be the earliest known ancestor of modern horses, and its evolution provides insights into the development of the equine lineage.
