Meaning and Origin
Deasil (pronounced "dey-shuhl") is a clockwise movement or circuit. It is a term used in Gaelic and Druidic practices and refers to the traditional direction for ritual circumambulations or processions.
According to the ancient Irish, the sun rises in the east and travels clockwise around the sky. This celestial movement was seen as a symbol of life and growth. Therefore, moving deasil was believed to align oneself with the auspicious forces of the universe and bring good fortune.
In contrast, widdershins (pronounced "widder-shins") refers to a counterclockwise movement, which was associated with dark forces or evil.
