Meaning of Beltway:
The Beltway is a circular highway that encircles the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
Etymology (Origin of the Word):
The term "Beltway" is a portmanteau of the words "belt" and "parkway".
Origin:
The term "Beltway" was first used in the 1940s to refer to the Intercity Highway System, a network of planned highways that included a circular route around Washington, D.C.
The first section of this circular route, designated as Interstate 495, opened in 1964. Over the years, the entire 64-mile (103 km) highway was completed and became known as the Beltway.
The term has since been adopted for other circular highways around major metropolitan areas, such as the Atlanta Beltway (Interstate 285) and the Houston Beltway (Interstate 610).
