Etymology:
The word "anthelion" is derived from two Greek words:
Meaning and Origin:
An anthelion is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as a bright spot directly opposite the sun, forming a secondary image of the sun. It is caused by the reflection and refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere.
The term "anthelion" was first coined by the French astronomer Jean-Antoine Nollet in 1749. Nollet observed the phenomenon and noted its symmetrical position relative to the sun. He realized that the name "anthelion" would be appropriate, as it captures the idea of an "anti-sun" or a second sun appearing opposite the real one.
