Etymology:
Meaning:
Velociraptor translates to "swift seizer" or "fast plunderer."
Origin:
The name Velociraptor was first coined by paleoornithologist Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924. It was based on a small, well-preserved skull and claw that were discovered in Mongolia. Initially classified in the genus Velociraptor, subsequent research revealed that it belonged to a different genus now known as Deinonychus.
In the 1970s, new fossil discoveries in the same region yielded more complete specimens, confirming that the animal had been much smaller than originally thought. This led to the species being formally reclassified as Velociraptor mongoliensis in 1988.
The name Velociraptor has become synonymous with the agile and intelligent theropod dinosaur depicted in the Jurassic Park franchise.
