Etymology
The word "uranium" is derived from the Latinized form of the name of the German astronomer Johan Gottlieb Gahn's first planet he discovered in 1789, Uranus. Uranus, in turn, was named after the Greek deity (and father of Zeus) Ouranos, which means "heaven" or "sky".
