Etymology

The word "Uranian" comes from the ancient Greek word "Ouranos" (Οὐρανός), which refers to the personification of the sky and the husband of Gaia (Earth).

Meaning

"Uranian" has several meanings:

The use of "Uranian" in reference to Uranus comes from the planet's discovery by Sir William Herschel in 1781. Herschel named it after George III, the reigning monarch of Britain, who was the patron of science. However, at the time, astronomers wanted to follow the Roman tradition of naming planets after gods, so they also suggested the name "Ouranos."

The association of "Uranian" with homosexuality originated in the writings of German sexologist Karl-Heinrich Ulrichs in the late 19th century.
