The term "supertuberation" was first used in the 17th century by the English physician William Harvey to describe the phenomenon of multiple births in animals. Harvey proposed that supertuberation resulted from the implantation of two or more fertilized eggs in the uterus.
However, it was not until the 19th century that supertuberation was first described in humans. In 1834, the German physician Johann Friedrich Meckel published a case report of a woman who had given birth to quintuplets, all of whom were conceived from a single ovulation and fertilization event.
